Huge pit dug into the top of the tell to give access to the rock beneath, as an entrance to the water system. Note the ancient and modern steps giving access to the tunnel opening at the bottom of the pit. The effort used in making this water system is a vivid reminder of the importance of water for thesurvival of a city like Megiddo in time of siege. This water system probably dates to the time of Ahab, but it was modified at various times. (See the following images for more...)
