Too much to comment on in this small space, suffice to say that your colleagues represent a sad tradition that has no empirical basis! What you talk about in terms of 'presence' is similar to the phenomenon of 'transactional distance', proposed by Michael Moore (of DE fame) in the 1980s. Just let me finish that PhD... ;o) Mark.
