Arad: through the hills

This first shot approaches Arad through the hills to the west of the Beer Sheva valley, north of Beersheva itself.

Tell Arad was a useful defensive position to control this valley cutting into the Judean hills. Although in the north of the Negev these hills have enough grass to support the flocks of semi-nomadic Bedouin (even in August after several months of dry season, when this shot was taken).
