Just inside the gate was a plaza area (some 20 x 12m). Here we are looking from the gateway past the storehouses (right) across housing to the modern observation platform constructed over the Hellenistic watchtower. The plaza area was not only a convenient (to the administrative and military functions in the gate) public area, but could also serve as an assembly point in time of war. The governor's house is to to the left of this plaza.
