The gate partially uncovered by Macalister who believed it to be part of a "Maccabean Castle" has been understood to be a typical Solomonic six chambered gate since it was first recognized by Yadin (1958). To the right (south) of the gate are remains of the casemate wall and a barracks probably from the same period.
