Since tels are formed by the accretion of material from destroyed cities on top of an existing hill, they arrive at a typical regular smooth steep sided structure. (See "cities" in Amos - Postmodern Bible Commentary.) Here, below the excavated "Solomonic" gate the side of Tel Megiddo illustrates this.
