Remains of the Bronze Age (Canaanite) city at the base of the large "trench" cut into the tell, notice the stratified layers above lead through the Iron Age (Israelite period) to more recent cities. This is a good indication of how tells acquired their distinctive regular steep sided shape through repeated destruction of stone and mudbrick cities.
